Whether I’m skating in a sentient forest or smashing giant crystals in the desert, the overall presentation oozes sweet delight and sets the tone excellently throughout the course of the game. The colorful and bright visuals (reminiscent of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time) and its lo-fi tracks give a cool, calming atmosphere. These styles include avoiding specific obstacles, or performing a certain trick enough times. It’s a boon for dedicated players or perfectionists thanks to “challenge cards” which require unique styles of play to attain. In order to build in replay value, the developers have included an ever-growing list of tricks and skills which are unlocked after completing specific tutorials over the course of the campaign. Also, checkpoints are plentiful, which minimizes frustration in this fast-paced romp. The moment to moment loop is quite enjoyable, even in the late game when levels are more difficult. The system is elegant and carries depth that skilled players will appreciate. Simple tricks are controlled by orienting the left joystick in specific areas, while more advanced tricks require intricate movements of the joystick before letting go. After mastering a simple heel kick, the player will soon learn rail grinding, wall riding, crystal smashing, and train hopping as they cross the vibrant Radlandia. Gameplay is a fluid, airtight experience that begins with basic obstacles and jumps before escalating into in a crescendo of combos.
